While slip-on shoes date back to early man, the term “penny loafer” is said to come from a new footwear design in the 1930s that had a slit big enough to house a penny in each shoe. Those two cents were just enough to make a phone call. From then till now, the penny loafer has endured as a refined but scholarly staple of the wardrobe.

Unlike designer-name shoes that are made in Malaysia, these loafers are handcrafted in Italy by some of the country’s best cobblers.
